Dear Parents and Students:
With another school year about to begin, I would like to extend a welcome back to our students and parents as we embark on the 2010-2011 school year with our newly consolidated district, USD 113 Prairie Hills. There are a few things that I would like to make you aware of for the year to come.
School Website
USD 113 has a new website in which we will keep up to date with important information for you to utilize. The website is located at http://usd113.org and all you need to do is click on the Bern Schools tab to find pertinent information.
USD 113 Alerts
USD 113 will be offering a service called USD 113 Alerts. This system allows parents and students to sign up for text message and e-mail alerts sent straight to your cell phone and/or the email address that you provide. These alerts will include school closings, activity/sports alerts and community alerts. To sign up for this please visit our website http://usd113.org and on the right side of the page you will see a tab entitled “USD 113 Alerts” – just click on that tab and you will be directed to another page in which you will enter your personal information and sign up for this service. This is a beneficial service that I hope you will take advantage of.
PowerSchool
At some point in the near future, you will be provided a user id and password to PowerSchool where you will be given access to your child(ren)’s grades. This is an online grade book that will show your child(ren)’s assignments and grades, attendance and tardy record.
Lunch Payments
With enrollment you will purchase your student(s) first meal ticket, which will cover the first 20 days of school meals. Each time your child eats, that meal cost will be deducted from that positive balance. You will receive monthly lunch invoices that will reflect the amount due and the date for which it is due. It is imperative that you maintain a positive balance for your child. Students are not allowed to overcharge meals in excess of $15.25. If a student has an outstanding lunch balance of $15.25, he/she will need to either bring the appropriate amount of money to pay his/her lunch bill or bring a sack lunch as a regular school lunch will not be served to that student. Parents will be notified once a lunch bill has become overdue to hopefully prevent this situation from occurring.
Free/Reduced Meals
A copy of the free and reduced meals application has been included in every enrollment packet. Please take the time to fill this out if you feel that your family may benefit from this program. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Kathi in the office.
Student Assurance Insurance
With the consolidation came an improvement to our secondary insurance coverage for injuries that may occur at school or school activities. In the past, our students were provided catastrophic insurance, this year our students will receive FULL SECONDARY COVERAGE of injuries that occur at school or at school activities through Student Assurance Services, Inc. Please be aware that because this is a secondary insurance, the student’s primary insurance coverage is always used in its entirety before the school’s insurance takes effect. It is also important for you to note that it is the parent’s responsibility to file claims through Student Assurance. A school official will fill out a “Proof of Claim” form for any student injury and it will be sent home with the student. The bottom portion of that claim form is to be filled out by the parent and mailed to Student Assurance Services, Inc. as per the directions on the form.
Parents will also have the option to buy 24-hour student insurance that extends to non-school related functions through the school insurance provider for a one-time annual fee. Forms to purchase this option are available with enrollment information or by contacting the school office.
Band Instruments
New district insurance policies do not cover student owned instruments while they are housed at school. However, homeowner’s and renter’s insurance policies typically include coverage for instruments. If you are uncertain, please refer to your personal policy or contact your insurance agent.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of these items, please feel free to call me at 336-3031 or e-mail me at schnackr@usd113.org
Thank you,
Rick Schnacker
